William Lawrence was baptized on 28 July 1622 at the Abbey Church of Saint Alban in Saint Albans, Hertfordshire, England, a son of Thomas Lawrence and Joan Antrobus. Grandson of John Lawrence and Elizabeth (Bull) Lawrence.

William Lawrence sailed for Massachusetts on 2 April 1635 on the Planter from London with his mother, maternal grandmother, stepfather and siblings. The ship arrived in Boston on Sunday 7 June 1635.

He was first in Ipswich in 1635, but he removed to Duxbury by 1643.

William Lawrence married
(1) [Anna ?] Sprague before 1 April 1644 and
(2) Elizabeth Smith on 4 March 1664/65.

Father of ten children.

On 1 April 1644, Francis Sprague of Duxbury deeded 50 acres of land on the South River to "Willm Laurence my sonne in law" of Duxbury. The deed also promised 6 bushels of corn to be given at the end of two years in 1646 for three years of service "he hath and is to serve me".

On 10 October 1645, William Lawrence became a patentee of Vlissingen, New Netherland (present-day Flushing, Queens County, New York, which at the time included present-day College Point). The list of eighteen patentees included his elder brother John Lawrence.

After his period of assistance to his father-in-law, William Lawrence sold his 50 acres of "upland" in Duxbury to John Phillips on 2 September 1647 and removed permanently to his landholdings on Long Island, where he owned about 900 acres.

Board of Magistrates of Flushing in 1655. Presiding Magistrate in 1656. Captain of the Flushing Foot Company in 1665. Sheriff in 1673. Justice of the Peace of the North Riding of Long Island in 1675, 1676 and 1679.

Wealthy landowner and merchant of Tew's Neck on Long Island (present-day College Point, Queens County, New York), as well as many other properties.

His home was located on Tew's Neck, later known as Lawrence's Neck, which at the time was a peninsula separated by a swamp from the remainder of Flushing to the south.

William Lawrence of Flushing (College Point) died at his home on 14 March 1679/80.

2. William Lawrence of Gravesend (Gravesend, Queens County, New York).

Notably, William Lawrence of Flushing (married Elizabeth Smith) did not live in New Jersey.
