Note that both the birth year and the death date displayed on the stone are incorrect. The birth year explained further down in this biography, the death date, according to the obituary.

Elmer was the 4th child of 11 born to Raybern Paul Turnipseed, a farmer, and his wife, Clara Sideen Bear.

His siblings: Maude Ellen, Virgil Earl, Olive Pansy, Homer Richard, Alma Cecil, Ethel Gertrude, Lois Mildred, Roy Jennings, Lloyd William, and Golda Mae.

• 1900 U.S. Fed. census: age 13; birth date: Aug 1886; is attending school; living in Cedar township, Washington County, Iowa with his parents and 9 siblings.
• 1905 Iowa census: age 19; birth year: abt 1886; living in Washington County, Iowa
• 1910 U.S. Fed. census: age 24; birth date: 1886; living with his parents and 7 siblings; employed as a farmer on his father's farm
• 1915 Iowa census: age 29; birth year: abt 1886; education: 10 common, college 1; listed as single and still living in Cedar township, Washington County, Iowa.

Note that the obituary has his initials displayed incorrectly but his identity is proved by the identification of his father and brothers towards the end.

There seems to be some discrepancy in Elmer's birth year. His gravestone reads 1885 but gravestones are often unreliable records. The Illinois Death record indicates 1886 was his birth year. Of course, the death record relies on an informant providing that information so that date could be suspect as well. But note that both census records also support 1886 as his birth year. Absent an Iowa State birth certificate, (which probably doesn't exist because he was most likely born at home and which he didn't live long enough to request a certified copy from the State), the exact year may never be known. However, he was most certainly born in Washington County, Iowa. His father and mother were life-long residents of the county and all his other siblings were born there.
