Homer was born 5th of eleven children to Rayburn Paul Turnipseed and Clara Sideen Bear who were farmers in Washington County, Iowa.

His siblings: Maude Ellen, Virgil Earl, Olive Pansy, Elmer Ernest, Alma Cecil, Ethel Gertrude, Lois Mildred, Roy Jennings, Lloyd William, and Golda Mae.

In 1900, Homer was living with his parents and 9 siblings in Cedar township, Washington County, Iowa.

In 1905 and 1910, he was living with his parents and 7 siblings, still in Cedar township.

Homer married Faye Ferguson, (daughter of Frank Ferguson and Ida McAvoy), on September 16, 1911 at Washington, Iowa. They divorced about 2 years later.

Married 2nd, LaVera Ada "Vera" Messenger Wade, (daughter of Norton Henry Messenger and Clara Belle Allen), a widow, on August 11, 1920 at Davenport, Iowa. She brought two young daughters to the marriage.
