Mary was the daughter of Abel Childs and Maggie Lawson who met and married in Polo, Illinois. Mary was the first of their five children. Her siblings (in this order) were Fleeda, Lizzie, Fred and Roscoe. In 1865 the family moved to Tama County, Iowa where the youngest three children were born.

In 1876, Mary's father became the superintendent of the County Home which was a poor farm and insane asylum. The family lived at the facility. In 1885 Mary married Elisha Allison Rogers who was known as A.E. They had two children: Harold Childs Rogers in 1886 and Mildred Mary Rogers in 1889. A year and eight months after Mildred was born, Mary died at the age of 28.
