Fred J. Childs, 80, Traer real estate man and lifelong resident and good citizen of this community, died of a heart attack in his office about 11:15 Tuesday morning. He was found by John Montgomery. Fred had been afflicted by a heart ailment since the spring of 1940 and was in a Waterloo hospital last January, but his condition improved, and he had been in the office nearly every day since.
He was born April 5, 1872, on the farm south of Traer now owned by Theo Hansen, a son of Abel and Margaret Childs, early settlers. Fred was a young boy when his parents became the first steward and matron of the Tama County Home, north of Toledo. They served several years. Fred attended rural school near Toledo during that time. When the family returned to farming in Perry township, they occupied the farm southwest of Traer which has been occupied by Floyd Childs and family since 1931. Fred attended Western College in Toledo as a youth . The late S. L. Whannel of Traer was a classmate. Then he farmed with his father until his marriage to Sarah Kolp on March 26, 1898. After marriage, Fred and his wife farmed what is now the Mrs. L. W. Halupnik farm north of Traer for a year, the Loder farm on the Perry-Carroll township line now farmed by Ed Buresh and finally to the Abe Childs homestead. Fred and wife quit farming and moved to Traer in 1924. In 1925 he engaged in the real estate business as a partner of E. E. Taylor. When Mr. Taylor retired from that business, Fred continued on his own.
Fred Childs was a useful citizen, interested in the Traer community, and gave much of his time to public jobs. He was Perry township assessor for about 20 years. Then he was elected township clerk many years ago, and still had the job at his death. Only a few days ago he accepted his usual appointment on the Perry precinct election board. He was one of the groups who formed the Farmers Lumber and Elevator companies. He was a director and secretary of the latter company throughout its entire history until his death. He served several years as a trustee of the Traer municipal electric plant, succeeding the late Ed Glosser. When the county assessor system was instituted in 1949, Fred was appointed to the new county board of review and was its first chairman. He was reappointed for another term a few months ago. He had served as an appraiser for a federal government agency for G. I. housing loans in the community. Had Fred lived two months he would have received a 50 year membership certificate from Masonic order. He became a member of Hesperia lodge of Traer in December 1902. He was also a member of the Iowa Consistory and the Mystic Shrine and of the United Presbyterian church.
Mr. and Mrs. Childs were parents of three sons—Floyd, on the farm; Seward, of Waterloo; and Laurence, of Traer. There are nine grandchildren. Mrs. Childs died October 12, 1948. He leaves a sister, Mrs. Fleda Galley, 83, who is with a son, Lester at Hereford, Texas. A sister, Mrs. Sophia Rogers, died many years ago; another sister Mrs. Charles Kolp at Paullina, Iowa in 1928, and his only brother, Roscoe, in 1923.
The funeral services were held the States Funeral Home at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, conducted, the Rev. Wesley Jones, United Presbyterian pastor. Mrs. Elmer Taylor Jr. and Mrs. Donald Martin sang, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Leroy Whannel. Casket bearers were Ralph and Wendell Crawford, Frank Hladik, John Townsend, Evan Wilson and Randy Currens. Mrs. Harold Young and Mr. Peter Whannel had charge of flowers. Members of Hesperia lodge attended in a body and conducted the Masonic rites at the grave in Buckingham cemetery.
