James Franklin "Frank" Ellison, Jr., age 48, of Verona, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at his home. Funeral service was held Monday, August 1, at 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Brian C. Burch and Rev. Norman Wilhoit officiating. A committal service was held Tuesday, August 2, at 11 a.m. at Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat with American Legion Post 229 of Rural Retreat conducting graveside military rites.

He was born August 14, 1962, in Wythe County, VA and was a good person, kind and loving. He loved to swim, fish and hunt and sports, especially football. He attended church from a baby through adulthood and was a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church. He was always a gentle, respectful, quiet child and man. He was an honor student all through his school life. He was smart. He went three years to Wytheville Community College finishing with two associate degrees and earned a bachelor's degree from Emory & Henry College. He joined the U.S. Army after college and was transferred to the 760th Engineering Battalion in Marion. He served approximately 16 years in the service. He then worked for the forestry service in Harrisonburg seven years and then went to Packaging Corp. in Harrisonburg until his death. He was reliable, trustworthy and always went to work. He was a wonderful son, brother, nephew, cousin and uncle. He loved his family very much.

He is survived by his parents, Jim and Susan Ellison of Rural Retreat; two sisters, Beth King and friend, Mike Kinder, both of Rural Retreat, and Ann Ellison of Wytheville; nieces and nephews, Laura Rakes, Danah Stoots, Lindsay King, Timothy King Jr. and their families; aunts and uncles, Carolyn Ellison, and Ethel and Pete Wright; special great-aunts, Annie Reynolds and Patsy Heldreth Jones; and cousins, Jack Ellison III, Barry Wright, Eric Wright and their families.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association. Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat was in charge of the arrangements.
