Mary Susan Ayers Ellison, age 76 of Rural Retreat, VA went to her heavenly home February 7, 2016. She was a loving and caring person. Baking, gardening, singing and caring for her family and others were the activities she enjoyed.

Susan worked at American Screw Company/Amsco Products for 33 years before retiring. She was an avid sports fan. She loved the New York Yankees, Chicago Bulls, Nascar’s Jimmy Johnson, UNC, the Rural Retreat Indians and fishing. When her grandson Timothy was playing football Susan and Jim would cook for the whole team every week during football season. She was loved by the whole team. She and Jim attended many of the games. She loved fishing at the Rural Retreat Lake. Many times she would out fish her husband as well as many other fisherman. She was a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church. Singing in the choir was something she loved.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Ethel Ayers, her son, James Franklin Ellison, Jr., her mother-in-law, Mabel Ellison, her brother-in-law, Howard Jackson Ellison, Jr. and her sister-in-law Helen Virginia Bedwell.

Susan was survived by her husband of 56 years, James F. “Jim” Ellison, Sr.; two daughters, Mary Elizabeth and her son-in-law Mike Kinder and Laura Ann Ellison; her grandson, Timothy Dale King, Jr. and granddaughters and husbands, Laura and Travis Rakes, Danah and Kenneth Stoots and Lindsay and Seth Losey; precious great-grandchildren include Madelyn and Mason King, Brionna, Maria and Tristan Rakes, and Lillian and Molly Stoots; the best sisters, Carolyn Ellison and Ethel and brother-in-law Pete Wright; special nephews and their wives and children, Jack Ellison, III, Andy, Grace and Adeline, Barry and Mary Wright, Allen and J.B. and Eric and Teresa Wright, Haylee and Hayden; her aunt, Annie Reynolds. She had many friends and also the pet dog Dexter.

Funeral services were held at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at the Lindsey Memorial Chapel with Rev. Don Smith officiating with a committal service following at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family received friends from 5:00 P.M. until service time. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital one of Susan's favorite charities.
