James Franklin “Jim” Ellison, Sr., age 78, of Rural Retreat, VA went to be with his loving wife Susan in heaven Tuesday, February 16, 2016.

Jim was a terrific husband, father and an awesome grandad. He loved his family, farming, fishing, helping others and watching sports and movies with his loved ones. Jim was in the Marine Corps. He sold insurance, ran Sunset Memory Gardens, did taxes and worked construction. He built houses, tunnels, bridges and retired from the Town of Wytheville. He loved going to Timothy’s football games with Susan and was secretly an avid Hokie fan. He was a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church.

Jim was preceded in death by his his wife, Susan , his wife of 56 years, whom he could not live without; son, James Franklin “Frank” Ellison, Jr.; father and mother, Howard J. Ellison and Mabel Heldreth Ellison; brother, Howard Jackson Ellison, Jr.; sister, Helen Virginia Bedwell and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Ethel Ayers.

Jim is survived by two daughters, Mary Elizabeth and her husband Mike Kinder, Laura Ann Ellison; grandson, Timothy Dale King, Jr. whom he spent the most time with; three beautiful and helpful granddaughters and husbands, Laura and Travis Rakes, Danah and Kenneth Stoots and Lindsay and Seth Losey; precious great-grandchildren Madelyn and Mason King, Brionna, Maria, and Tristan Rakes, and Lillian and Molly Stoots; best sisters-in-law, Carolyn Ellison and Ethel and husband Pete Wright; special nephews and families, Jack Ellison, III, Andy, Grace and Adeline, Barry and Mary Wright, Allen and J. B. and Eric and Teresa Wright, Haylee and Hayden. He had many friends and also the family pet Dog Dexter.

Funeral services were held at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, February 18, 2016 at the Lindsey Memorial Chapel with Rev. Don Smith officiating with a committal service following at 11:00 A.M. Friday in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Military rites were conducted by American Legion Post # 229 of Rural Retreat and the U.S. Marine Corps Honor Guard of Johnson City, TN. The family received friends from 5:00 P.M. until service time. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
