Lena Garfield Succumbs at 87
Tyringham, Dec. 27--Miss Lena G. Garfield, 87, last of the Garfield family to carry the Garfield name, died this morning in her home on Main St., after a long illness. She was born in Tyringham, April 16, 1870, daughter of Wallace and Hannah (Canon) Garfield. Her grandparents were among the three families that founded this town, coming to Tyringham from Weston. She was educated in local schools and was a graduate of Lee High School and attended Wilbraham Academy and graduated from Westfield Normal School and Boston Slayd School.

She taught at Tyringham, Amherst and for 35 years was on the faculty of the Clarke School for the Deaf in Northampton. She retired in 1934 and had since made her home with her sister, Mrs. Blanche Rouse. She leaves besides her sister a niece, Miss Carolyn Canon of Tyringham and two nephews, Northrup Canon of Tyringham and W. Garfield Canon of Lee. For several years she served as town clerk.

The funeral will be held Sunday at 1.30 at her home and at 2 p.m. in Union Church with Rev. Franklin L. Couch, pastor of Union Church, officiating. Burial will be in Tyringham Cemetery. Calling hours at her home will be Saturday afternoon after 4. The omission of flowers is requested. Friends may donate to the Union Church fund. The M. J. Kelly funeral home is in charge.
