Nina Braden Reed Former teacher, Y-12 worker
Nina Mae Jett Braden Reed, 97, of Coalfield, died Thursday, July 24, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Reed was previously employed with Anderson County schools. She taught at Rosedale, Donovan, Frost Bottom and Marlow elementary schools.She also worked on the Manhattan Project during the early years of Oak Ridge, and later was employed with Union Carbide Nuclear Division at the Y-12 Plant. In recent years, she had been a homemaker. She enjoyed crocheting and embroidering and she made many gifts for family and friends, the family said. She was devoted to her family, they said.
She was born Aug. 11, 1899, in Anderson County, the daughter of Oliver Jett and Mary Gardner Jett. Mrs. Reed was the last surviving charter member of Batley Baptist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Naomi B. Farmer and her husband, James C., and Lillian O. McKamey, all of the Batley community, and Mary "Sunnie" Walls of Oak Ridge; two sons, Harold J. Braden and his wife, Mildred, of Coalfield, and Edwin C. Braden and his wife, Mozelle, of the Mossy Grove community.
Mrs. Reed is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.Margaret Handley was her caregiver and was considered a special friend.
Mrs. Reed's husbands, Clarence "Penny" Braden and James A. Reed, died earlier. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 26, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Howard Robbins and the Rev. Luke Kidwell officiating.A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at Batley Cemetery.The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home
