Wiley Newton Jones, 80, well-known Waycross businessman died last night at his home, 804 Carswell Ave., after a long illness.

Born in Brantley County, Mr. Jones was the son of James Burrell Jones and Mary Highsmith Jones. He was the great grandson of James Jones and Nancy Delk Jones, pioneer settlers of Ware County, who came from North Carolina in 1820. His great grandfather served as a second lieutenant of the 590th district of Ware County from 1827-1834. His father served during the war between the states in Longstreet's Brigade.

Mr. Jones moved to Waycross as a young man, entering the mercantile business. He was for many years associated with his brother, J. A. Jones, in one of the largest wholesale and retail carriage businesses in this section in the days before the advent of the automobile. Later he was partner with A. C. Griffin and the late J. A. Larkins in the Standard Shoe Company, one of the first specialty stores in Waycross.

From 1916 through the 1930s he was engaged in real estate and several development enterprises in the vast undeveloped Okeechobee region of Florida, and more recently operated several small retail businesses in Waycross. He had been in declining health for the past several years.

Mr. Jones was married on December 4, 1895, to Minnie Margaret Brinson, a member of an influential family in Jefferson County. Her father was Judge John Wright Brinson. In 1945 Mr. and Mrs. Jones celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at a large reception at their home given by their four daughters. Mrs. Jones died in 1949.

Mr. Jones' lifelong love of Ware County and his interest in this section is expressed in a biographical the appraisal of him in the history of Ware County, published in 1934, in which it is stated: "During his entire career he has stood behind every movement put forward for the good of the town and has manifested an intense loyalty to the traditions of his native county. His nature has been kind, generous and considerate; he has had a long and honorable career."

He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Joe Soyars, Jacksonville Florida, Mrs. Edward A. Fish, Williamsburg Ky., Mrs. Edwin McCarty, Atlanta and Mrs. Carey Sutlive, Washington DC: one brother, J. E. Jones, Waycross: one sister, Mrs. Mitchell James, Bainbridge; three half brothers, N. C. Jones, Thomas E. Jones and J. H. Jones all of Belle Glade, Fla.; two sisters in law, Mrs. T. B. Atwell, Waycross, and Mrs. C. O. Paul, Eureka Springs, Ark., and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock at Hinsons chapel. Interment will be in Lott Cemetery. Hinson funeral parlors is in charge of arrangements.
