Mr Jones began teaching school in Wayne County, now Brantley County in 1854. [ He would have been 17 years old.] A few years later he was a store manager at Lulaton. During that time he was elected Coroner of Wayne County, serving 1860-1862. About 1861 he went to Stockton, then in Clinch County, but now Lanier County, and opened up a modest mercantile business, and while there he married. His business venture at Stockton was a failure, and he then went to Milltown, now Lakeland, Ga. and entered business in 1866 with more success than at Stockton. About 4 years later, (1870?), he sold out and went to Polk County, Fla., where his wife's brother-in-law, Sherrod E. Roberts had moved and was in the mercantile business. Four years later, 1874, he came back to Ga. and located at Valdosta, Lowndes Co., Ga., entering the general mercantile business there. His business prospered, and he remained in the merchandise business many years. In 1874 he organized the Valdosta Guano Company and became its president. In 1906 he took a leading part in organizing the Valdosta Bank and Trust Company, and served as its president until his death, Nov29,1918. He was 81 years old.
