Body Will Arrive At El Reno Today

Funeral services for Second Lieutenant Jack Evans, 20, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the First Presbyterian church with Rev. Holmes Nichols, Rev. J. W. Hodges and Rev. Everett Poole officiating.

Military burial rites will be conducted at the El Reno cemetery with Benson funeral home in charge.

Lieutenant Evans, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Evans, 415 South Roberts avenue, was one of 10 air corps officers and men killed May 16 in the ground collision of two army bombers at the Ephrata, Wash., air base where Lieutenant Evans, a bombardier had been stationed eight weeks. His body will arrive in El Reno Sunday afternoon.

Besides his parents Lieutenant Evans Is survived Robert Evans, of the army air reserve, who is at home awaiting orders for further duties in the armed forces.

Billy J. Evans was the youngest son of Cyrus Augustus Evans and his wife Vernie Catchings Evans. He and his older brother, Bob, grew up in El Reno, helping their dad at his dry cleaning business. I wish I could tell you more about him, but anyone that could is now gone. After only a year in college, he enlisted in the USAF. By the time of his death a year later, he was a Lieutenant. He left behind his parents and brother and a community that watched this young man grow, and then saw him as he came back home in his coffin. I did not know him, yes, but I think he was one of our unsung heroes.
