Upshur's oldest living native celebrates her 106th birthday(headline)
Alice Fore, who is almost certainly the oldest living native of Upshur county, recently celebrated her 106th birthday at Aquarena Springs Restaurant in San Marcos. Among those on hand for the celebration were her nephews and their wives of Gilmer, Charles and Elanor Roberts and Dick and Dorothy Roberts. Mrs. Fore, who lives in Wimberley, is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Roberts and the sister of the late C.H.Roberts, Sr. In all there were seven girls and four boys in the family. She was born in the Roberts family home at N. Montgomery and Walnut Str. in 1884, one year after it was built - the first child of the Roberts family to be born there. Her older sister, Sally, had been born in a log house situated about 100 feet west of the new frame house, which at that time was the northern most house in Gilmer. The log house now has been moved to the property of the late Dr. and Mrs. E.C. McAlpin and restored. It is open periodically on occasions such as the Cherokee Rose Festival. The house in which Mrs. Fore was born, is now owned by her great nephew, Bob Roberts and is being remodeled by him. Mrs. Fore was the first telephone operator in Gilmer, having her switchboard in one corner of her father's place of business, where he manufactured and repaired wagons and buggies on the north side to the courthouse square. He also did all types of blacksmithing and had a general line of hardware. The store had the phone number "1" and the W.A. Roberts home had the number "2". The switchboard was later moved to the old Commercial Hotel and she served as the telephone operator there. Mrs. Fore can tell many interesting stories about early days in Gilmer, her nephews report. Hosting the birthday party were Mrs. Fore's sons, Charles and Milton Fore and daughter-in-law Robbie, all of Wimberley and William of Seguin. also present for the celebration were her grandsons, Robert of San Marcos and Tommy and his wife Carol of San Antonio. Gladys Robertson of Wimberley and Evelyn Johnson of San Antonio were other guests.
