Dr. Verla F. Burleson Metsker, 91, of Carthage, passed away at 4:50 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at St. Luke's Nursing Center.

Verla was one of nine children to William Arron Burleson and Nora Bell (Mitchell) Burleson on July 30, 1916, near Greenfield, Mo. The family lived at Avilla, Mo., until 1933, then moved to Carthage.

Dr. Metsker graduated from Carthage High School in 1935. She graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Mo., in 1945. Dr. Metsker was very active in the chiropractic profession. She was a member of the Sacro Occipital International and Craniopathy Technic Society for 43 years. Dr. Metsker taught Baby Technic for 10 years in Omaha, Neb. She was a member of the Missouri Chiropractic Association for many years. Dr. Metsker was voted chiropractic of the year in 1969 by this association. She retired at the age of 70.

Dr. Metsker and her husband joined the Church of the Nazarene in 1950. She served her church in several areas: a church board member for 12 years, Sunday school teacher, Missionary Society president, congregational song leader, choir member, Sunday school treasurer, Women Ministry Sunday school class member.

Dr. Verla Metsker was married to Doane R. Metsker, May 26, 1948, in Carthage. He preceded her in death Dec. 7, 2003.

Survivors include one brother, Dr. Kenneth Burleson of Doniphan, Mo., and one sister, Edna Elsey of California, one niece, Jeannie Hager of Tennessee, one nephew, Kenneth Burleson, Jr. of Pittsburg, Kan., and goddaughter Tia Strait of Carthage, nine nieces and nephews, Jeannie Hager, of Doyle, Tenn., Kenneth R. Burleson Jr., Wilma Wilder, of Visalia, Calif., JoAnn Nelson, of Chicago, Ill., Dr. Ron Elsey, of Riverside, Calif., Gary Elsey, of Norco, Calif., Burl Gann, Visalia, Calif., Jim Brown, of Carthage and Richard Metsker, of Carthage.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at First Church of the Nazarene in Carthage. Visitation will be 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at Ulmer Funeral Home. Burial will be at Park Cemetery. Contributions may be made to First Church of the Nazarene.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.
