BOY 6, DROWNS IN HYDE POND

BODY RECOVERED AFTER 45 MINUTES IN WATER

Cousin of Little John Burleson Runs Half Mile to Summon Aid - Two Were Wading

John Burleson, 6 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Burleson, 1220 James street, was downed in a pond on the Hyde greenhouse property at the southeast edge of the city about 4:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
John and his cousin, Elvin Mitchell, 7, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jep Mitchell, 1125 Clinton street, slipped off from their homes yesterday afternoon and went to the pond. Neither of the boys could swim, but they disrobed and went into the water. They were paying around in a shallow part. John started wading toward the middle of the pond and suddenly he disappeared and then started bobbing up and down, according to Elvin, who said he then realized his cousin was drowning. the Mitchell boy ran to the bank and as soon as he could put on his overalls he ran to the Burleson home about a half mile away to notify the boy's parents.
The body was recovered about 5:30 o'clock by Mr. Burleson, a relief worker, who had just returned from his work when the Mitchell boy arrived with the news of the tragedy.
The top of the boy's head was above water in a place about four feet deep which apparently was where he had drowned, the father said. The body was taken to the home of Dr. Lloyd B. Clinton on Grand Avenue by Mr. and Mrs. Burleson, the child's aunt, Mrs. Ora O'Neal, and Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Hackney, cousins. Dr. Clinton pronounced the child dead.
Dr. W. G. Hogan of Neck City, county coroner, conducted an investigation last night at the Knell Mortuary. He pronounced death due to drowning.
John was born October 20, 1928 at Avilla. Surviving besides his parents are four sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Gann of Exeter, CA., Mrs. Merle Coppo of Hollywood, CA., and Misses Edna and Venea Burleson at home; a brother, Kenneth, 9, at home and his grandmother, Mrs. M. E. Mitchell, at home. Mrs. Gann and Mrs. Coppo will be here for the funeral.
Mr. and Mrs. Burleson came to Carthage in March, 1934 from Avilla, where they had lived 13 years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, July 2, at the Knell service home. The Rev. B. Hilton and the Rev. John Harrison will be in charge. Burial will be in the Avilla Cemetery.
