First Lt. Victor Shivy's Body Found in Basement of Luzerne Home
            --------------------------
A Luzerne Army lieutenant, apparently despondent over sickness, committed suicide yesterday in the basement of his home, where he was spending a holiday furlough.
The victim was First Lt. Victor W. Shivy of 575 Miller Street, Luzerne, who was on furlough from Valley Forge Hospital, where he was a patient.
Peter Williams, who lives across the street, heard the shot at 2 yesterday afternoon and hurried to the Shivy residence to investigate. At the same time, Mrs. Shivy, who was about a block away, heard the noise and rushed toward the home.
Williams found the body of Shivy in the basement of the home with a bullet hole in the head. Williams summoned police and Assistant Chief John Adams responded.
Dr. J. W. Kirschner was called to the scene and pronounced the man dead as a result of a bullet which had entered the head above the right eye. Dr. Russell Davis, deputy coroner, and Dr. Lewis Reese, coroner, also investigated.
According to Chief Adams, Shivy used a .32 calibre German automatic to end his life. Adams said the motive apparently was "battle fatigue" for which he was being treated at the Army hospital. The body was turned over to Army authorities and was returned to Valley Forge Hospital where it will be prepared for burial. The body will be shipped to the funeral home, 658 Bennett Street, Luzerne, for funeral services.
Lt. Shivy is survived by his wife Marguerite; son, Victor, Jr., at home; brothers and sisters, Mrs. Michael Johnson, Forty Fort; Stephen, Kingston; Mrs. Frank Clark, Bel Air, Md.; Leo and Frank Shivy, Luzerne.
