John "Jack" Byrne, 84, Punta Gorda, died June 20, 2005, at Life Care Center in Sarasota. He was born April 13, 1921, in Detroit. He entered the Air Force in 1942 and graduated as a lieutenant in 1943. He served as a bombardier in the European theater. After being shot down over Austria, he became a prisoner of war for 15 months. He lived in the Chicago suburbs and operated two accounting and tax services. He was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church in Clarendon Hills, Ill. He served the Parish Council, the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine and the Eucharistic Ministry. He was a charter member of DuPage Serra Club and served on the Bishop's Budget Committee of the Joliet Diocese. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda, American Legion Post 110 in Port Charlotte and Peace River Chapter of AXPOW. He was a member of the Punta Gorda Boat Club. His business associations were the National Association of Public Accountants and the Illinois Association of Accountants Inc. (Fox Valley Chapter). He was a former president of the Association of Business Accountants, Midwest Association. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Shirley; a daughter, Sue Vandel; a son, Joseph; and six grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Punta Gorda. Entombment with military honors by American Legion Post 110 will be at Charlotte Memorial Gardens, 5200 Indian Springs Cemetery Road, Punta Gorda. Charlotte Memorial Funeral Home in Punta Gorda is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building Fund, 211 W. Charlotte Ave., Punta Gorda, FL 33950.
