Mother of Barbara (1940) and Laura (1945); grandmother of Lisa, Laurie, Russell, and John; great grandmother of Andrew, Kayla, Lauren, Jonathan and Connor. She became the stepmother of Larry Leroy Ardis, Jr at a very young age and was his true and understanding friend through his high school days at Edmunds High School in Sumter, SC

Bertie was born near Foreston in Clarendon County, South Carolina, a daughter of John Wesley and Clara Ethel Hodge Ardis. She graduated from Manning High School where she was named "The Most Beautiful Girl" in her Senior Class.

She married in 1939, Larry Leroy Ardis Sr, a widower with a young son who had lost his mother 6 years earlier.

She, Larry and Roy lived in Sumter where her husband owned and managed a foundry, Ardis Machine Shop on South Main Street.

After the death of her husband in 1950, she married John R Doverspike in 1952 and the family moved from Sumter to Columbia.

Her life would soon reveal the depth of her inward beauty as she dedicated her talents to teaching children in the Sunday School at Forest Drive Baptist Church and later at North Trenholm Baptist Church for more than 45 years.

She will always be loved by her family and missed by everyone who knew her heart of gold and the patience of a saint which she grew as a woman of God...
