Jesse enlisted as a Private in the 1st West Virginia Infantry Volunteers, Company M on June 20, 1898 by Lieut. Charles W. Conner of the 3rd Battalion for service in the Spanish-American War under the command of Capt. R.N. Humphreys. His dedication to our country was cut short due to illness and injury that resulted in an honorable discharge on February 4, 1899, the same day the regiment mustered out of service at Columbus, Georgia.

He married Alice Garrison on January 31, 1910 in Wetzel County at the home of his bride. They resided and raised their children in Wheeling.

Jesse became a resident of the Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Dayton, Ohio on August 5 1930. He was still there at the time of the 1940 census.

He was 64 on his World War II draft card, still living at Dayton Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. While still there in 1949, his wife of 39 years died in Wheeling.

Jesse died in Dayton at the age of 77. Services were held at the Hoyne Funeral Home and interment at the Dayton National Cemetery.
