MRS. ELIZABETH STRICKLIN MATTHEWS DIED AT WOODRUFF, W.VA., AGED 96
Mrs. Elizabeth Stricklin Matthews, widow of the late Andrew J. Matthews, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mack Gray, at Woodruff, Marshall county, on Friday morning at 11 o'clock. She was a member of a pioneer family, widely esteemed by all of the community where she spent an active and useful life. Mrs. Matthews was 96 years of age and death due to the infirmities of her advanced years.
Mrs. Matthews was born near Cameron, W.Va. January 22, 1845, a daughter of Humphrey and Rachel Hendrickson Stricklin. She was united in marriage at the close of the Civil War to Andrew J. Matthews, a soldier of that war.
The following children survive: Harry Matthews and Mrs. Kizzie Gray of Woodruff, and Jessie L. Matthews of Dayton, Ohio. Preceding her in death were George Freeman Matthews, Jasper Newton Matthews and Mrs. Rachel Ann Bonar.
A sister also survived, Mrs. Flora Belle Hart of Bellton, W.Va.
Mrs. Matthews had spent all her life in Marshall County and most of it in Liberty district. She was known throughout a wide territory of Marshall County for her ministrations in time of sickness and sorrow.
The remains have been removed to the Antil funeral home at Cameron, where it will remain until funeral services, to be held Sunday afternoon in the Big Run church.
