WAXAHACHIE - W.W. “Bill” Fleming, 79, of Waxahachie, formerly of Hunt County, died Saturday. Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Waxahachie with Jim Olney and John Dowd officiating. Burial is at 3 p.m. in Brigham Cemetery in Campbell.

The son of W.W. and Nancy Jane Ethridge Fleming Sr., he was born in Grovehill, Ala. on Jan. 31, 1919. Raised in Campbell, he graduated from Commerce High School and attended East Texas State University. He married Mary Dell Ridley on March 13, 1942 in McKinney before entering the U.S. Army.

Mr. Fleming served with General Patton’s 69th Armored Infantry Division, participating in the Battle of the Bulge and occupation of Germany. After the war Mr. Fleming returned to duties with the Wyatt’s Grocery Store in Dallas. He moved to Waxahachie in 1952 to manage that city’s store; his store was perennially recognized as one of the Top 10 stores in North Texas.

He was an integral part of the formation of Wyatt’s merging with Kroger. He retired after 43 years with the company and his retirement day was proclaimed at Bill Fleming Day and the Flag was flown in honor of him over the Ellis County Courthouse.

A member of the First United Methodist Church of Waxahachie, he was a member and past president of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. He was a member and past president of Worshipful Master of the Waxahachie Masonic Lodge 90, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, member and past president of the Waxahachie Lions Club and past president of the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce.

Surviving are a son, Bill F. Fleming of Austin; two daughters, Carole Duvall of Lancaster and Cathy Thompson of Midlothian; a brother, N.A. Fleming of Grand Prairie; four sisters, Mary Knight of Las Cruces, N.M., Jo Wiley of Gladewter, Louise Holley of Greenville and Willie Gray McMiIllan of Selma, Ala; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years in May 1997; three brothers and two sisters.

Pallbearers are grandsons and nephews Gary Fleming, Johnny Gibson, and Ronnie George. Honorary pallbearers will be Marvin Borders, Sam Winn, Charlie Pace and Lillian Martin.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wayne Boze Funeral Home, 1311 Ferris Ave.
