John Hippert's obituary from the Grass Valley Union dated Nov. 8, 1818: "John Hippert is Called by Death at Graniteville - John Hippert, one of the oldest and best known residents of Graniteville, died there yesterday morning after a long illness, brought on by the infirmities attendant upon old age. Mr. Hippert had made his home at Graniteville for over fifty years, having engaged in mining until his health began to decline. He was the owner of some promising claims in that vicinity and had an abiding faith in the possibilities of that section of the county as a gold producer. Deceased always took an active interest in the welfare of his home town and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. At the time of his death Mr. Hippert was aged about 82 years. The funeral will take place there tomorrow. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Tillie Phelps, and a son, John Hippert Jr., both of whom reside at Graniteville."
