Philip Physic Hippert was born April 2, 1841 Germantown PA to Andrew & Mary Magareth (Snyder) Hippert. He married Isabella Foster Street, the daughter of Curtis Gilbert Street and Isabella Dunfee of Germantown, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania on December 16, 1857 in Germantown. Philip died January 13, 1908 in Nevada City, California at the home of his daughter. He was a soldier in the Civil War, serving in the Battle Of Shiloh, the Battle of Corinth, and Vicksburg where he contracted a disease of his left ear from exposure (this left him unable to hear well), as written in his submission for pension, "Declaration for Original Invalid Pension" dated July 3, 1888. He mustered in out of Keokuk, Iowa in January 1862. Later in life he attended the 37th annual encampment of the GAR in San Francisco in August of 1903. Fifty-six trainloads of visitors arrived and brought in over 8,000 guests. People witnessed the first general electrical display. (article from the Daily Morning Union August 18, 1903).

Philip wrote letters regarding his service in the Civil War that were discovered on the internet. From "Proceedings Crocker's Iowa Brigade Fifth Biennial Reunion Held at Council Bluffs, Iowa September 18 and 19, 1880,page 64:

Captain H.H. Rood:

Dear Sir and Comrade, - Circular letter relating to the fifth biennial reunion of the Crocker Iowa Brigade, to be held at Council Bluffs, Iowa, September 18 and 19, was duly received. It would afford me unqualified pleasure to meet and greet my old comrades on that occasion, as I know I would there meet many of the boys of my own company (H, 15th Iowa), as the most of them were enrolled there. There is no place this side of Jerusalem that I would rather be than with the boys of the old Iowa Brigade. God bless them all. But I have straggled too far westward, and a long distance up in the Sierra mountains, to be able to attend. I especially enjoin upon you to convey my regards and good wishes to every one of the boys, and assure them that the friendship cemented during our nation's struggle for life is still as firm and solid as when first formed. I know you will have a grand old time at Council Bluffs. Please remember me to old Shadey, and our tried and true old comrade and General, Wm. W. Belknap, who was at all times on hand for any task he might be called upon to perform. Your friend and comrade.

Philip P. Hippert

Note On the Civil War Photo attached: This photo was found in an old photo album with the photo of Phillip P. Hippert, a family photo of John and Ann Jane (Dunfee) Burton and children taken about 1863 at Alexandria, Virginia during the Civil War, and a picture of a young John Burton and older brother Benjamin Burton taken at London, England about 1850 or so. It is not confirmed, but possibly John Burton born about 1809 in England had sons Benjamin and John Burton from a previous marriage. This photo album was obtained by the Library of Congress.

Notes:

Related to cartes de visite of Benjamin Burton, also taken in London, an older John Burton with his wife and three children taken in Alexandria, Virginia, and Philip P. Hippert, which were processed as LOT 14043-2, nos. 782, 784, and 785. The seller noted that these photographs were all from the same album. Preliminary research shows that Philip Hippert's mother was Margarita (AKA Mary Margaret) Burton Hippert of Germantown, Pennsylvania. (informant in error for Mary Hippert, she was a Schneider)

- Gift; Tom Liljenquist; 2017; (DLC/PP-2017:171, formerly deposit D073)

- Purchased from: Rick Carlile Military Books, Dayton, Ohio, June 2017.
