Sister Eleanor was the daughter of James M. and Josephine Herlinger Brown. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Education at Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY and a Master of Arts in Education at the University of Southern California. She entered the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary at Marymount in Tarrytown, NY on September 8, 1929. She made her first vows in Tarrytown on March 26, 1931 and her final vows in Los Angeles on August 15, 1936. Sister Eleanor began her ministry of education at Marymount School, Neuilly, France. In 1933 she was sent to California where she taught at Marymount School, Los Angeles and was the founding principal of Corvallis High School, Studio City. She returned to Marymount School, Neuilly in 1947 where she was in charge of the Junior Year Abroad Program for Marymount College, Tarrytown. The next year she went to the College in Tarrytown and taught in the Education Department. In 1952, Sister Eleanor went back to California. She served as superior of the community and principal at Corvallis High School, before becoming president of Marymount College, Westwood, Los Angeles, CA in 1954. She taught at Marymount High School, Palos Verdes, CA and at Sacred Heart of Mary, Montebello, CA. She was founding principal of Marymount School, Bougival, France (1960-1964). Over the next ten years, she was a member of the education department of Marymount Junior College, Boca Raton, FL; the faculty of Marymount School, Neuilly, France; and in charge of the Marymount College Junior Year Abroad Program at Marymount International School, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, England. Her final year in a school setting was as a member of the faculty of Marymount School, Richmond, VA. In 1974, Sister Eleanor began several years of pastoral ministry at St. Mary's Hospital, Richmond, VA and Henrico Doctors Hospital, Richmond. In 1980 she moved to Virginia Beach, VA where she lived in Russell House and ministered to senior citizens. She retired to Marymount Convent, Tarrytown, NY in 1999.
