"Scott Bradley was a man of genius. He was the first guy of all of us [film composers] who ever had a major article written about his work...Bradley was a wizard. He's my favorite cartoon composer. He was a wonderful little mosey man, inventive, brilliant". - Composer David Raksin ("Laura"), speaking of Bradley in 1994. The article he refers to is Ingolf Dahl's "Notes on Cartoon Music" (1949).

Tom and Jerry in the Oscar-winning "The Cat Concerto" (1946). Bradley arranged Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2" to better reflect the visual gags - and tossed in a quote of the song "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe" from the MGM feature "The Harvey Girls" (1945) for good measure. Tom's playing was dubbed by future jazz great Calvin Jackson, then a young staff musician at MGM.

A surreal moment from the Tom and Jerry short "Puttin' on the Dog" (1944). It was this gag sequence that prompted Bradley to experiment with serial technique in his score - a first in Hollywood movie music. In an interview he described how it came about:

"A little mouse was running around with the mask of a dog over his head. You only saw the little fellow's feet carrying the mask and it looked very grotesque and funny. But I was stuck for a new way of describing the action musically and for a whole day I worried about it. Everything I tried seemed common. Finally I tried the 12-tone scale and there it was! This scene was repeated five times within the next 50 seconds and I had only to use my scale – played by piccolo, oboe and bassoon in unison".

Audiences weren't aware of the craft involved, of course - it was just a weirdly funny effect. But it worked. Little serialist excursions became Bradley trademarks for the rest of his career, but it was not until the late 1950s that younger composers like Leonard Rosenman and Jerry Goldsmith began writing 12-tone music for Hollywood features.
