Sarah Williamson was the daughter of John Williamson and Sarah Plaster. Sarah's mother died about the time she was born, and she was brought up by her Plaster grandparents.

Sarah married Charles William Mayson on Christmas Day, 1840. Their children were James Lucas Mayson (died young), Carrie Elizabeth Mayson (Mrs. Napoleon Harris Cheshire), Emma Lucinda Mayson (did not marry), John William Mayson, Sarah Jane Exer Mayson (Mrs. John Copeland Todd), and Charles Conway Mayson.

During the Civil War, Sarah's husband Charles William Mayson was a private in Co. B, 7th Georgia Infantry. He enlisted 31 May 1861 in Atlanta for a year. Charles' CSA file says that he was killed in battle near Yorktown, VA. In her widow's pension application, widow Sarah Mayson testified, "on the 16th day of April 1862 [Charles] was instantly killed from a shell shot by the enemy near Dam No. 1 on the Peninsular in Virginia."
