Stephen Hoepffer, the son of Stephen, the emigrant, and his wife Gertrude Hoepffer, was born June 17, 1778 in Heidelberg Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Stephen was trained as a weaver and must have been a good one, as he was able to support a large family.

At the age of twenty-two, he married 18-year-old Catharine Hoffman, the daughter of Johan Frederick Hoffman and Anna Catharina Braun, at Christ Lutheran Church, Stouchsburg, Tulpehocken Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania on April 15, 1800. They remained in that area for a few years and had a son, David H. Hepfer born March 30, 1801. Catharine's parents were sponsors at young David's baptism.

By 1805 Stephen and his small family had migrated westward to the German settlement of Grindstone Hill just south of Chambersburg in Franklin County. Tax assessments were taken every three years at that time, 1801-1804-1807, and in 1807, the value of his trade of weaving and one cow was a total of $52.

Stephen and Catharine established a stable home life there for their children in this deeply devout Lutheran community. According to the census records, by 1810 they had five sons under the age of 10 years and were living next door to Catharine's brother, Frederick and his wife Barbara. by 1820, they had five sons and three daughters. The children who have been confirmed are: David, Daniel, Frederick, Samuel, John William, Catharine, Elizabeth and Mary.

Stephen Hoepffer died on February 7, 1848, and was buried by his family at Grindstone Hill Cemetery.
