A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, in Ross Hollywood Chapel for Maryann Eilleen Ballew, who died Jan. 12 at age 80.

Maryann Eilleen Samuelson was born in Portland, where she lived all her life. She was a descendant of Volga Germans who emigrated from Rosenberg, Russia, and commercial fishers who emigrated from north of the Arctic Circle in Norway. As a girl she was surrounded by a large, extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. She graduated from Grant High School in 1947, then studied machine stenotype, and later worked at the Multnomah County Library-Hollywood Branch and Roseway Theater. In 1954, she married Hollis Ballew. After her marriage, Maryann was a homemaker, and volunteered as PTA member/President, 4-H club leader, school room-mother and school office volunteer, and was a member of the Portland Newcomers Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew Samuelson and Mary Stricker Samuelson Sands, step-father Elliott R. Sands, sister Dolores Medhus, and husband Hollis.

Survivors include her daughters, Barbara, Janice, and Annette Ballew and Lenore Oishi; sons, Craig (Tracy) and David (Mollie); 10 grandchildren, Chase, Nicholas, Devin, Tiffany, Bryce, Alexandra, Elisa, Evan, Lillian, and Joe; step-sister, Carol; best friend Joan Moreland, and the close friends of her Book Club.
