Born Mae Katherine Berg, Sister Majella grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She entered the RSHM order in 1934 at the age of 18 and made her first vows at Marymount in Tarrytown, New York, in 1936; she made her final vows there in 1941. Sr. Majella earned a bachelor's degree in Latin from Marymount College in Tarrytown and a master's degree in classics at Fordham University. Later, Georgetown University and Marymount Manhattan College each awarded her the degree Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. Sister Majella was 87 and a Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 68 years. She taught at Marymount School, NYC and was a registrar at Marymount Colleges in Manhattan, Arlington, VA and Tarrytown. She was named president of the Marymount College, Arlington of Virginia (later Marymount University) in Arlington in 1960, a position she held until 1993. Under her leadership, Marymount grew from a two-year women’s college into a comprehensive, coeducational university. AT the time of her death, Sr. Majella was President Emerita of Marymount University. She had recently moved to the Marymount Convent in Tarrytown. Sr. Marjella is survived by two sisters: Joan Therese Berg Cavanaugh of Islip, NY and Dorothy Berg Faregello of Spring Hill, TN.
