Don is survived by his mother, Harry Mae Gates; parental grandmother, Catherine Dupree; maternal grandmother, Hazel Murray; brothers, Neal Murray Gates, Desmond and Kanan; also survived by one aunt, two uncles; a host of nieces, nephews and godchildren. He was predeceased by his father, Donald "Gator" Gates and his sister, Rachel. He was a lifelong member of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Albany.
