Jim Overturf, still residing in Pennsylvania in the same area of his ancestors, says the family lore is that Maria may have been an American Indian maiden that took the name of Maria Chute, as the Chute family was a prominent family in that area. This was done frequently in that era of time, and there are family descendants that have the dark black straight hair, and some men that have no facial hair.
Dr. Homer Davis writes in his memoirs on Page 22 his Mother's family was told that Maria Chute was a direct descendant of the Chute family who were with William Penn among the early Quaker colonists of Pennsylvania, and who helped William Penn in the Philadelphia colony. In the history of early Pennsylvania, the Chute family had doctors, lawyers, and judges among the family descendants.
Neither story has been substantiated.
