Samuel was the 4th son of Henry and Maria [Chute] Overturf. The family moved from Union County, PA to Bennezette, Cameron Co., PA soon after he was born.
It was there he met and married Olivia Woodworth on 24 Aug 1837. They lived the first approximate 20 years of married life in the area of Caladonia, Elk Co., PA, then moved to Butler Co., Iowa before their 7th and final child was born.
Samuel built the first frame house in Pilltown, Iowa and the first election was held in that house, and the first schoolroom in Butler County was built as a room to this house. This house still stands across the road from the Pilltown (now Oak Hill) Cemetery.
When the house was built, the lumber was hauled by wagon from Cedar Falls, IA to Pilltown. At that time it took about 10 days to make the trip with horses and wagon and now it takes less than an hour by car.
