Sixteen-year-old Vernon was a student who had been forced to give up school because of illness. He was the son of Fred Stamey and Lillie Mae Abee.

Surviving in addition to his parents were brothers Lawrence, Gilbert, Kelly, Earl, James,Ralph, and Clifford; and sisters Kathleen and Margaret Magdelene.

Services were held by the Rev. R.J. Whitenack, with burial following in the Enon Cemetery.
