Patrolman Edward Dippel was a New York City Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty during the brutal Civil War Draft Riots of 1863. He was keeping a mob from torching the house of Horace Greeley, a known anti-slavery advocate, when he was shot on July 15, 1863. He died from his wounds on July 19, 1863.
