According to Shawn Dunlap, Jonas and his brother Wade were born in Virginia and the families moved across the mountains to Kentucky after the war began. Both served together in the Kentucky Infantry Volunteers for the UNION! Both deserted in July of 1863, but were awarded honorable discharges by law in 1918.
