During Nov-Dec of 1864 he was convalescing at Camp Nashville, TN and in Jan 1865 was admitted to the field hospital at Memphis, TN. He was finally discharged on July 15, 1865 due to partial paralysis of his lower extremities & incontinence of the bladder due to an injury while engaged in battle.
James married Lucinda 'Lucy' Brient about 1839 and and together were parents to:
- Mary M Allen
- Mildred Albina 'Milly' Allen
- Harriet Amanda Allen
- Elizabeth Frances Allen
James died sometime prior to 12 Oct 1869, when his widow Lucy filed for her widow's pension.
