Family trees on Ancestry list her DOD as 4 Sep 1956 and 6 Dec 1945. These dates are incorrect!!! The photo of her burial clearly shows her husband in the photo - he passed away in March of 1956 - she passed before her husband so 4 SEP 1956 can be ruled as incorrect. In addition - she appears on the 1950 census and her name appears on an invitation to a farewell party for her daughter given 16 APR 1949 at her home (photo of invitation posted) so the date of 6 Dec 1945 can also be ruled out.
There was no written language for the Samoans until the Missionaries came in the early 1800s. And they set up an alphabet as we know today. When recording names they would use the individuals first name and the last name would be the name of their Sa'o(chief of the family). This was used for many many years and then (and I do not know when) individuals began to use their first name followed by their birth father's FIRST name. I see this change in the 1930s. An example: our Grandfather Malala had 7 children with our Grandmother- 6 of them legally used the last name of MALALA (first name of their father). But the oldest of the group's legal name was Petelo Gi (last name of the Sa'o of the family). So long story short, when I set up Tovaega's profile I used Tovaega Lepa (her Fathers first name), Fuga (the name of Lepa's Sa'o). My husband said Tovaega's name was Tovaega Fuga Gi . The Gi title comes from Lia'i. Her Brother and her Father held the Gi title in the past. Lia'i is buried a Gagamoe (where the Gi fale used to be) along with 2 of her Brothers.

According to the property agreement dated 8 JUL 1921 only 6 of her children were alive - Jack hadn't been born yet and two girls, Vaega and Line, had died
