Denichi "Charlie" Hisatake, known as Sale Sapani (Charlie, the Japanese), was born in Yokohama, Japan. He came to the United States as part of the crew of carpenters and engineers to build the coaling wharf for the United States Navy when he was 29 years old.
He was the oldest non-Samoan in the islands having come to Tutuila as a merchant marine in 1898 before the Navy took over administration of Samoa.
He was in the mercantile and baking business most of his life and taught the Samoans the art of fishing at night with a torch.
