RESIDED: in Somerset County; Baltimore County, 1779; Princess Anne Hundred, Somerset County, 1783; Washington, D.C., 1801. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: possibly Arnold Elzey, Gent. (ca. 1724-?). MARRIED by 1796 Henrietta (?-1835), daughter of Ephraim Wilson (1726-1778) and wife Mary; granddaughter of David Wilson (1704-1750); niece of Samuel Wilson (1735-1790). Her brother was David, said to be mentally incompetent in 1777. Her sister was Peggy. CHILDREN. DAUGHTER: Elizabeth M. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: A.B., College of New Jersey (later became Princeton University), 1775. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican, Somerset Parish, Somerset County. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES: member of the American Whig Society, 1775; a founder of the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland, 1799; vice president of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: a physician. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Somerset County, 1784. LOCAL OFFICE: Somerset Parish Vestry, Somerset County, elected 1792, 1795, out of office by 1797. MILITARY SERVICE: surgeon, Twenty-third Regiment, Maryland Militia, served from 1794-1800; garrison surgeon's mate, U.S. Army Fifth District, appointed 1814; post surgeon, Washington, D.C., appointed in 1816. WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL PROPERTY: assessed value £315.0.0, including 8 slaves, 1783; assessed value £460.0.0, including 17 slaves, 1793. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION: possibly ca. 775 acres in Somerset County obtained through his marriage, but the date of his marriage is unknown. SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH: assessed for 817 acres in Somerset County, 1793; purchased at least 137 acres in Somerset County, plus 1 lot in Princess Anne, Somerset County, 1795; sold more than 1,006 acres in Somerset County, plus 1 lot in Princess Anne, Somerset County, 1796 to 1808.
