He married Mae Schmidt on 28 February 1976 in Brady. He had served on the Mason School Board and Mason Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. He was currently serving on the Mason County River Authority Board. He was a rancher. Survived by his wife; one son; three brothers - Dr. Victor Kothman, Henry Kothman, David Kothman; one siser - Dorothy Moody.
