Net Official Roland Baker Dies at 54
Roland Baker, 54, of 1304 N Street, principal of Springville School and one of Indiana's best known basketball officials, collapsed and died last night while officiating a Hoosier College Conference basketball game between Hanover and Anderson. Baker, who had been an official since 1933, was stricken at Anderson with about three minutes left to play in the game. He was dead on arrival at St. John's Hospital in Anderson. Witnesses said Baker called a foul, turned around and then fell to the court. The game was called at that point with Hanover winning 93-72.
In addition to his professional career in education, Mr. Baker operated the Roland Baker Insurance Agency in Bedford. The agency will be closed until next Monday because of Mr. Baker's death.
Mr. Baker was in his fourth year as principal at Springville. He was a 1937 graduate of Central Normal College at Danville and was doing additional work at Indiana University at the time of his death. Prior to becoming principal at Springville, he taught sixth grade at Oolitic for two years. He began teaching in 1937 at Oolitic and taught there until 1942 when he became employed at the Crane Naval Ammunition Depot. He then went into the insurance and securities business following World War Two and returned to teaching in 1962.
He was a graduate of Oolitic High School with the Class of 1932. Mr. Baker was a member of the Bedford Elks Club and Indiana State Teachers Association.
He was born November 2, 1913 in Lawrence County, the son of John L. and Cora Trueblood Baker. He was twice married, first to Virginia Kilgus and later, on October 29, 1948 to Carol Campbell, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Olin (Sue) Canada, Mrs. Robert (Ann) Harrell and Mrs. Michael (Pam) Embree, all of Bedford; five grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Albert(Bernice) Broglin of Oolitic, Mrs. Raymond (Erma) Lawyer of Oolitic and Mrs. Opal (Freda) Casada of Bedford.
In his basketball officiating career, Mr. Baker recently estimated that he had officiated at about 2,000 games. He was umpire for Indiana High School Athletic Association state tournaments in 1949 and 1950. In recent years he had largely devoted his time to officiating college basketball games. He also did some football officiating. Baker was scheduled to officiate more than 20 games this season.
Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m. Friday in Elmwood Chapel of th Day & Carter Mortuary with Rev. Guthrie Curtis officiating. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the mortuary at any time Thursday.
