From what has been passed down, John was extremely religious. On Sundays even the rope swing tied to the tree would be stilled. No playing on Sunday, no working - just praying. I often wonder how he felt about his son going off to war. Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when that was brought up! Also interesting that two of his daughters became missionaries. His other daughter, my great-great grandmother, married a "musician" who was not well received. In fact, John blamed this man for his daughter's untimely death because he was not able to provide her proper medical care. I hope - at some point in his life - John laughed and enjoyed life.
