He was born in Holzhausen, Kassel, Hesse, Germany.

He enlisted as a Private in Co. K of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment on 1 Dec 1863 and served 19 months as a prison guard on Johnson Island, near Sandusky, Ohio. He mustered out as a Private on 13 Jul 1865 at Camp Chase, Ohio.

He married his 1st wife, Mary Louisa Clark, on July 4, 1867.
They had 10 children: Mary Ann, William Henry, Cora Bell, Laura Adelia, Edwin Jacob, Ida May, Elizabeth Jane, Charles Alfred, Robert Leroy, and an infant that died.

He married his 2nd wife, Elsie J. Vreeland, on December 15, 1910 in Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan. They did not have any children.
