Mr. James Nott was born at Letton, Herefordshire on January 11th of 1829. He was the son of James Nott and his wife Margaret Edwards. Mr. Nott lived with his family at the Farlands Farm. Mr. Nott became a Methodist in 1849, then a preacher for upwards of 38 years. Mr. Nott was responsible for the building of two chapels, one built in 1855 and the other, the Lingen Chapel, in 1878. He was greatly influenced and encouraged by Mr. W J Gisborne, a member of the Knighton Board of Guardians. Lingen Chapel was opened by Mr. Gisborne on the 26th of June 1877 with a ceremony culminating in a tea for 400.

Mr. Nott married Jane Child in 1855 and together their children included:

Mr. Nott was held in the highest esteem by his neighbors. He was known to be a kind, gentle man with an open hand. His last day was spent preaching the word and visiting the sick. He died suddenly and alone outside of his home on the 4th of March 1888. Mr. Nott was 59 years old. His funeral was attended by the Squire and Vicar of the parish. He was buried in Lingen Chapel on the 10th of March.
