Poet. She was a British-born poet, who came to the United States in 1948 after marrying an American. A prolific poet, she was associated with Black Mountain poets during her career. In the 1960s, she became political with her demonstrations against the Vietnam War. She was known for such works as "The Double Image," "Relearning the Alphabet," and "Candles in Babylon." She was educated at home, never attending formal schooling. Her father was a Russian Jew who became a Church of England minister and could speak and write Hebrew, Russian, German, and English. Her first poem was published in "Poetry Quarterly" in 1940. During World War II, she was a nurse in London. In 1946 she published her first book of poems, "The Double Image." The poems she wrote during her last days were published posthumously as "This Great Unknowing: Last Poems" in 1999.
