James 'Jas' Moylan was born in the little town of Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland. The son of James 'Jas' Moylan and Elizabeth Kennedy.

His parents married in 1873 and James was one of five children. His siblings were John 1873-1874, Denis Christopher 1875 - , Margaret 1877 - , Bryan 1879 - , and one half sister Elizabeth Courtenay born 1883.

James married Bridget Butler on January 11 1911 and the couple had a daughter Elizabeth Alice on 26 December 1913. Bridget had previously been married to John Quinn who died in 1910. Their son William Quinn was born January 5 1910 and James became his step father when he and Bridget married the following year.

The war records for James also list another child Sarah Christina born November 23 1906 but it does not say if this child is Butler, Quinn or Moylan. She is claimed as a daughter and the War Office included her in the pension paid to Bridget after James died at war.

James war history also includes that he had a slight deformity on his right lower leg due to an old fracture. He was also appointed Lance Sgt. of his unit but this was without any pay increase an issue he appealed in war related correspondence.

James entered into the war signing up on May 8 1915. Initially he was posted to the 5th Connaught Rangers with serial number #5/4276 but after some disciplinary actions against him he was transferred to the Princess Victoria's Royal Irish Fusiliers 2nd Garrison Battalion. # G/1625 he was 38 years old.

He was dispatched to the Balkans and died in Salonika, Greece on December 28,1916 from Enteric (Disease/infection of the intestines). It does not say if this condition was war/injury related.

At the time of his death Bridget had their 3 children living at 3 Barrack Street, Nenagh, County Tipperary. She later applied for a widows pension which was approved.

James spoke both Gaelic and English. Prior to enlisting he was a Licenced Grocer.

1911 Census of Ireland confirm he and Bridget lived at 3 Barrack Street, Nenagh, Tipperary with William Quinn aged 1.

May he rest in peace in the Grace and Glory of God and his ultimate sacrifice never be forgotten.
