At the declaration of war, he like so many young men at the time, signed up for duty in the Army. He served as a private in the United States Army in France and was killed during the Battle of Argonne three days before the Armistice ending World War I.
There are two memorials to the Conway war dead for both World War I and World War II. The first is in front of the Faulkner County Courthouse in Conway. The second is at the entrance to Saint Joseph Cemetery in front of the Grotto and pond. Even though his grave is far away in France, the Saint Joseph Cemetery memorial puts him close to the graves of several siblings and his parents.
His family is both very proud of his life and service and sad that it was cut short at such a young age. He will not be forgotten. As a Christian, he is enjoying his reward in heaven for a life well spent.
