Joseph Sooby Jr., 84, of Wilkes-Barre, formerly of Michigan and Ohio, died on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, in the Inpatient Unit Hospice Care of the VNA Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre. Mr. Sooby was born in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late Joseph Sooby Sr. and Margaret James Sooby. He was a graduate of Coughlin High School, Class of 1942. He served as a Technician Third Grade with the Detached Medical Department of the Army's 132nd General Hospital in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal with one Bronze Star and the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military service, her received a B.A. degree from Bucknell University in 1949 and a Master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1951. He then served as a research assistant at the Michigan Natural History Museum and participated in field work in Jalisco, Mexico. He was awarded his teacher's certification from the University of Michigan's School of Education. He began his career as a biology teacher in Jackson, Mich., later teaching for 30 years at Tappan Junior High School and finally at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School until his retirement in 1984. During this time, he also did graduate work at Rutgers University and at Ohio State University.
Following his retirement, he moved to the Columbus, Ohio, area in 1984 and enjoyed his hobbies of music, gardening and English Culture. He had recently returned to live in Wilkes-Barre. He was baptized and confirmed in the former Calvary Episcopal Church, (now, Holy Cross Parish), Wilkes-Barre. In 1976, he became an active member of the Centeral Hohio Welsh Society and of the Buckeyes Bulldog Club. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his stepmother, Lugretta Sooby; and his longtime friend, Dr. Donald Vernall, of Columbus, Ohio. Surviving are several cousins and close friends. A graveside committal service will be held today at 10:45 a.m. in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. The Rev. John Leo, associate rector, Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Wilkes-Barre, will officiate. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be conducted at a time to be announced at Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Wilkes-Barre, at a future date. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Cross Episcopal Church, 375 N.
