John married his 1st wife Nancy Ann Akin about 1859, and married 2nd to Eleanor Sutton (Roberts-Johnson) Herring in 1886. His first marriage to Nancy produces 8 known children; Ellen, Eugenia, Lucinda, Mary, Leilar, Sarah, Martha, and an unknown, there may have been more children. John and Elenor had no known children.

He was born in Union County SC, to the parents of John Clemmons Nix and Sarah A Howard, both born in Union Co SC. His father died 1836, his mother migrated with the White's, her son-in-law Benjamin White, and arrived in area of Texarkana Bowie Co TX, on Feb 14, 1845.

John was the only male of his family of 6 or 7 sisters' Polly, Infant (died 6mo old), Sarah, Caroline, Ann, Ellen and possibly a Martha.
